Two Spirit
Mahu

Native Americans have always recognized a third gender. Though each tribe had different words for it, the universal English word is "Two Spirit." They can be males who present as feminine, females who present as masculine, or androgynous. They were revered as caregivers, healers, nannies to orphans, and visionaries. European influence eventually drove out respect for Two Spirit people.
Mahus fall somewhere between male and female in terms of gender alignment and had their own roles in society as caretakers, teachers, and healers.
