Bissu

Calalai/Calabai

Waria

The Bugis acknowledge male, female, and intersex, as well as five genders: men, women, calalai, calabai, and bissu. Bissu are a combination of all genders and must be born intersex and act as mediators between humans and spirits.

Calalai are females who take on the roles of males. Calalai are females who take on the roles of males, while calabai are males who take on the roles of females, but are not transgender women; they are considered to be their own gender. While calalai typically conform to male roles, calabai have their own role in society.

Warias are males who identify as females, cross-dressers, a third gender, or more (it seems to be more of a blanket term). They seem to be similar to calalai, but within Indonesia outside of the Bugis culture. Since they face discrimination, there are mosques built just for warias. Every year, there is a large pageant and festival for "Miss Waria Indonesia."
